25 Years of ProFM: Our Story in Chapters – Part 2: Taking the Plunge and the DSPX Revolution
Following its founding at the kitchen table in 2001, ProFM Solutions quickly gained major momentum. Pioneering with an online webshop truly paid off, but it also brought a significant logistical challenge. Our first house simply became too small for the growing stock of boxes and folders. It was time for the next step: we moved to a larger home where we immediately set up two full rooms dedicated entirely to the business. While that was a big step forward, the real challenge lay in the calendar.
When One Door Closes, Another Door Opens
In those early years, ProFM Solutions was still a side passion project. During the day, I was working a regular job—first at the NFGD in Zoetermeer, and later in a completely different, unique world: as a DJ and engineer on the ferry between Hook of Holland and England. It was wonderful work, but balancing it with a fast-growing business became increasingly complex. Things frequently clashed; customers would call for advice or orders while I was out in the middle of the North Sea.
In 2007, fate made the decision for me. The ferry route I worked on was discontinued, bringing my time on board to an end. Looking back, that was exactly the decisive push I needed. No more being torn between a boss and running my own company. In July 2007, I finally made the definitive choice: from that moment on, I was going 100% all-in on ProFM. It was exciting, but what a relief it was to finally have full focus.
Orban Pre-owned Gear and the BW Broadcast Attic Takeover
With a sea of newly recaptured time, I was able to shift my focus completely toward growth and expanding our product range. I looked for a unique position in the market and found it in trading high-quality, pre-owned broadcast equipment. We set our sights specifically on the legendary Orban Optimod audio processors. In the radio world, these devices are the holy grail for creating that recognizable, punchy sound, and the demand for reliable used models was massive at the time. It turned out to be an absolute bullseye.
But we didn’t stop at secondhand gear. The real revolution in our young inventory happened when we joined forces with the British manufacturer BW Broadcast. We secured the exclusive rights to market their brand-new, revolutionary DSPX audio processors.
With the introduction of this series including the DSPX mini and the DSPX Xtra (Extreme) we hit gold. The impact was instantly noticeable, even at home: boxes stacked up so quickly that our entire attic was completely taken over by the massive inventory of DSPX processors.
A Big Surprise at the Processing Day
The ultimate baptism of fire for these new machines came when we were invited to demonstrate the DSPX processors at the leading ‘Processing Day’ of that era. This was the gathering place for engineers and broadcasters who listened critically to every single nuance in the audio chain. We put our gear to the test and let the processors perform live. The reactions were overwhelming.
People were completely caught off guard by what these processors could achieve. Back then, it was unheard of for a device that was so affordable to sound so incredibly good and powerful. The DSPX mini in particular proved to be an absolute game-changer: it suddenly made a high-quality, professional audio processing solution accessible to radio stations with smaller budgets. We showed the industry that a fantastic on-air sound was no longer reserved just for the big players with deep pockets. We truly had something unique to offer the market, though the competition naturally didn’t sit still and reacted quickly. Literally hundreds of units found their way to local legal and pirate radio stations, internet broadcasters, and hobbyists alike.
The Big Players Step Up
By adding these specific product categories, our catalog became increasingly attractive to a very wide range of broadcast users. But the finest compliment came from the market itself: our client base didn’t just grow larger, it became far more professional. Following the introduction of the Ariane leveler, we were proud to add highly respected national names to our client roster such as Radio.nl, Sleutelstad, and even absolute giants like Radio 2 & 3, Qmusic, and Sky Radio.
Driven by this massive surge, international orders started pouring in. After our main competitor shifted their focus heavily toward ‘Zero Base’ licensing, we gained many new clients. The doors to our two home offices and the attic could barely close anymore due to all the inventory. To restore peace to our private life and to keep growing professionally, it was time for the ultimate move: the search for a real, dedicated commercial property near Waddinxveen… but more on that in Part 3!
