Part 1: The Pioneering Years and the Birth of an Online Ambition 25 Years of ProFM Broadcast.
On July 1, 2026, we will celebrate a milestone that fills me with immense pride: our 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century, radio and broadcast technology has been our absolute lifeblood at ProFM Broadcast. Today, it is a beautifully rewarding adventure and an established name in the industry. But it all started very modestly driven by pure necessity and an unconditional passion for the airwaves.
From Pirate Radio to Broadcast Entrepreneur
My love for radio started early. From the age of thirteen, I could always be found behind the mixing consoles and microphones. In the ’80s and ’90s, I was highly active in the illustrious pirate radio scene. Producing shows and keeping transmitters running for various stations, including Radio Centraal and Freewave. After yet another raid by the authorities, I knew it was time for a change of course but radio would never let me go. I continued to host programs for several legal local broadcasters, and that is where the seeds for our company were eventually planted.
Building a Local Radio Station
Around the turn of the century, a new, ambitious plan emerged: we wanted to build our own local radio station from scratch to provide the region with its own professional broadcast channel. Although the plans were concrete and we poured a lot of energy into them, legal and organizational challenges ultimately took a different turn, and the station never officially launched. However, radio blood creeps where it cannot walk. Through all those intensive preparations, I was already up to my ears in broadcast technology and valuable industry contacts.
The Birth of ProFM Solutions in 2001
The definitive step toward entrepreneurship followed in 2001, when a local broadcaster urgently needed a reliable radio automation system. Thanks to my previous plans and hands-on experience, I knew exactly what they needed and wanted to help them realize it. However, there was one practical obstacle: to purchase this professional broadcast equipment directly from manufacturers, you had to be registered as an official business. Without hesitation, I went to the Chamber of Commerce to register the name ProFM Solutions. I bought a few ring binders, set up a workspace at the kitchen table, and our business was officially born.
The Maverick: Pioneering the First Broadcast Webshop
From day one, I knew I wanted to do things differently than the traditional, well-established names in the market. We wanted to be and became the proverbial maverick in the industry. It was a time when online banking was still in its infancy and most people visited a physical showroom for their equipment. Online shopping was by no means the standard back then, and technically it was quite a challenge. Yet I persevered: we were determined to build a website where customers could order directly online and pay via manual bank transfer.
Our very first website from 2001 was a nostalgic yet, for its time, hyper-modern starting point. Although our product range was still modest in the beginning, we immediately noticed the massive advantage of an online store. Suddenly, the world was at our feet. Global borders blurred, and we could effortlessly reach radio creators far beyond our own region. In that regard, we were absolute online pioneers in the broadcast world.
The First Building Blocks: Radiohost, SIEL, and D&R
In those early days, we specifically looked for partners and products that aligned perfectly with our vision. Some of the very first manufacturers that placed their trust in us back then were Radiohost (for automation), SIEL, and D&R. These are brands that still play a fundamental role in the radio world today and formed the solid foundation of the wide, international catalog we now offer with ProFM Broadcast.
This is how it all started from home 25 years ago. In the next part, I look forward to taking you through our further growth, the relocations, and how we expanded our product range step by step. Because you don’t grow alone; you do it together with the community of broadcasters and radio professionals who have remained loyal to us all these years.
